The class starts with an improvisation task as a warm up, that focuses on waking up the imagination and finding ways to move that differ from learnt movement patterns, leading into a stamina building exercise, where the focus is on breath and space awareness. Then I will share a few movement tasks based on my own artistic work and on collaborations I have been part of, where we will improvise and make compositional choices through embodying different creatures and living beings, challenging the capabilities of the human body. Lastly I will share tools on character building with the physicality of the body as the starting point.

Thursday: 09.00-10.30 • Auri Ahola
In my class we open the day with gently moving and feeling our bodies. I give this class to dancers, but also to my working groups with artists from other art forms, and the key is the connection to your own body without the pressure of presenting a skill. We start from the floor and move upwards, bringing motion into our bodies calmly. We warm the body from inside out, with time. My aim is that the participants leave the class with a deep warmth and joy in their bodies.

BIO: Auri Ahola (born 1984) is an Inari Sámi dance artist, director and curator who has forged an extensive career, ranging from classical ballet to contemporary dance and multidisciplinary works. She worked as a dancer in Finnish National Opera Ballet for ten years, before starting a freelance career as a dancer and choreographer. Auri has performed internationally with companies such as Tero Saarinen Company and stages from Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow to Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, curated festivals and lead working groups of multidisciplinary artists. Auri has created her own works in Finnish side of Sápmi since 2016. In 2022 her full-length immersive work´Viehâ premiered in Rovaniemi Art Museum, receiving excellent reviews. The key elements in her works are community, intensive atmosphere and physical expression that crosses boundaries between art forms. Auri lives and works in Inari, Sápmi.
